's the real problem. i thought it was interesting. vice president biden said he was not concerned about getting guns out of the hands of minute people. well, i'm the same way. i don't think we should take away from good people, law-abiding people, the right to own firearms. , and what we ought to focus on is where the real problem is. you look at some of the plays that have strict gun control. washington d.c. had the strongest gun control law in the country. ofsh the highest murder rate. they understand the issue is the people that pull the triggers on those guns ask trying to keep guns away from them. that's what we ought to be focused on, and the mentally ill part i do consider a productive step that hopefully something will come of. >> haley barbour, thank you very much, governor. thanks for joining us today. appreciate it. >>> coming up next, carolyn mccarthy, a gun violence victim, and one of the strongest advocates on capitol hill as joe biden takes the road on gun violence. and it's the best as i understandoff. tim geithner could have asked for. the market reactions to ed. this i

them care enough about it that they will actually vote on it. >> considering joe biden, susan, has been leading the charge on gun control, i want to play one more clip from his google chat. he was asked if an assault weapons ban would -- >> a shotgun will keep you a lot safer. a double barrel shotgun than the assault weapons in somebody's hands who doesn't know how to use it. even one who does know how to use it. you know. it's harder to use an assault weapon and hit something than it is a shotgun. you want to keep people away in an earthquake, buy some shotgun shells. >> this seems to be part of the strategy. sort of common sense. also things like we've heard supporters say you don't need an assault rifle to shoot a duck. you need 30 shots from a magazine to kill a deer you probably shouldn't be out there hunting. what's the messaging and how important is the messaging? >> the messaging is important and we certainly see vice president biden out there. and the president, too. the white house says the president will be making speeches doing some trips that relate to this measure but the

the announcement? >> he has jack lew. he has joe biden to send up for the all-important relationships on capitol hill. i think this was a legacy pick. the president now has as we know an ambitious agenda that he laid out in the inaugural address. the question is, who is going to protect those goals from him? it's someone he has been with ever since his federal public life has started. that's mcdonough. this is somebody he trusts to protect not just himself. not just the staff, but to move that legacy and the obama era sooner or later will come to an end. the president clearly wants to make the major shape now. i think that's why he picked this man he trusts and has known for so long. >> john kerry ends before the senate foreign relations committee and he will be confirmed. i don't think there is any doubt about that. chuck hagel, that could be a little bit more. >> i think they will rough him up and be more lively than the john kerry hearings. in the end, the numbers. once senator schumer democrat said he answered all my questions, we know there have been meetings with others who have been criti

, the white house making a big push to ban assault weapons. joe biden will be in richmond, virginia, to make the case for a ban, and the president also said to hit the road to promote the plan in a google plus hangout yesterday, the vice president said this about gun safety yesterday. >> in california, everyone talks about the big earthquake or some terrible natural disaster as last line of defense. what do you say to those? >> i would say guess what? a shotgun will keep you a lot safer. a double-barrel shotgun than assault weapons in somebody's hands who doesn't know how to use it. even somebody who does know how to use it you know. it's harder to use an assault weapon than a shotgun. you want to keep somebody safe, buy some shotgun shells. >> and dianne feinstein has introduced a bill to ban assault rifles, including the ar- 15, the type used to kill the children in newtown. >> feinstein made her announcement in dramatic fashion. she had on hand the assault weapon and a lot of survivors of gun violence. it would prohibit the sale, manufacturer, transport, and importation of more than 150 s
